Shirley H. Morris

This brick is given in memory of Shirley H. Morris by Carolyn, Mark Herndon, and John Wilbur Morris.

Shirley H. Morris came to Orange Baptist Church in the 1950s by transfer of a letter from Rhoadesville Baptist Church, where she was very active. She had grown up right across the road from the church. She loved her Orange Baptist Church and, with a servant’s heart, gave freely of her time and talents to the church.

She was a member of the Chancel Choir, a Sunday School teacher and director, the Woman’s Missionary Union president, a member of the Kay Culpepper Circle, a Vacation Bible School teacher, and a member of the Homebound Committee. When the church purchased the Route 15 property, she was treasurer of the Lands Fund and handled all pledges and payments. Shirley was very excited about all the possibilities the land could offer.

Shirley was employed by the Orange County School Board for 42 years as a bookkeeper and retired in 1997 as Deputy Clerk. She was married to John Wilbur Morris, Jr., and had one daughter, Carolyn Morris Herndon, and son-in-law, Mark Herndon. She had one granddaughter, Sarah Herndon Sydnor, married to Raphael Sydnor, and three great-grandchildren. Her entire family is still active at Orange Baptist Church.
